- Every story needs characters.
- Their reactions and feelings drive the plot
- Characters are constructed by dialog description and how they act in certain situations.
- If he/she has a problem to solve they are the protagonist
- Against the protagonist = they are the antagonist
- Minor characters = Helps the pro/antagonist. are revealed through dialogue and action
- Traits = revealed through dialogue and action
- Typically change/evolve as the stories goes on
- Identify who tells the story + time and place
- to find main character find person who is talked about a lot
- figure out what the person wants
- look at what they do to get what they want
- protagonist = complex character
- conflicting emotions and motivations
- develops and changes over the course of the story
- advances plot events
- develops central idea of theme through their actions.
- analyze how the complex characters interact with others
- see how they develop the plot and theme.

- They can't get the key from the priest to the cemetery
- Story is told in limited-person narrator
- Have to figure out setting characters and events from actions of the two main characters
- Banana workers still feel the affects of the Banana massacres

- Text cultural context. Society specific to the setting customs or beliefs.
- May not also include culture of author or reader.
- Culture has history that includes religious and philosophical beliefs.
- Significance of honor is important to understand in a culture.
- Insight to theme and author's purpose.
